The diagrammatic drawings reproduced in this book have been selected from a greater number published in the “Illustrated London News” during the last few years. 
In collected form,as presented here, these pictures afford a most informative record of some of the most interesting achievements and phases of modern times. A few of the examples deal historically with subjects (ships for example) and make interesting comparisons with their counterparts of today.
Drawings or photographs of the external appearance of an aeroplane, ship, or other object of general interest are easily obtained but these do not enable us to realize the internal arrangements of the structures, the disposition of equipment mechanical and domestic, of. say, a great warship or areoplane. This is made possible only by the resources of the Illustrated London News in conjunction with the work of artists, especially Mr. G. H. Davis,who, in addition to his drawing abilities,is gifted with technical knowledge which enables him to comprehend intricate structural details,and to translate them into pictures readily understandable by the lay public.
